Chapter 1 of 1142 Al-Baqarah ›
Al-Fātiḥah · The Opening
سُورَةُ الفاتحة
About this chapter
Fātiḥat al-Kitāb (lit. opening of the book) is a special surah that was apparently revealed twice: once in Mecca and once in Medina. This could show the significance and centrality of this chapter in the Quran. All Muslims are required to recite this chapter in their five obligatory daily prayers. It is also an integral part of other recommended and optional prayers.
The introduction sets out when the chapter came and what it addresses; the merits gather what the narrations say of reading it. Both are written as units of the tafsir, with their own footnotes.
