Who we are

The Ocean of the Quran (theoceanofthequran.org) is produced by EQTP. EQTP decides how the personal information described here is used, and is responsible for it under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018. You can write to us through the contact form about anything in this notice.

What you can do without telling us anything

You can read the whole tafsir, search it and listen to it without an account and without giving us any personal information. We do not show advertising and we do not sell or share information about our readers.

What we collect, and why

When you read the site

Our servers record the technical details every website receives: your device's internet address, the page asked for, the time, and the browser's name. We use these to keep the site running, to stop misuse and to put faults right, and keep them only for a short time.

Your browser keeps a few small settings on your own device: the theme and text size you chose, whether to show the Arabic, and where you last stopped reading, so the home page can take you back there. These stay on your device and are not sent to us unless you sign in.

If you allow analytics

If you choose "That's fine" when the site asks, we use Google Analytics to count which pages are read, so we know what readers find useful. Google receives your device's internet address and details of the pages you visit. We do not send it your name, your email address or anything you write. If you choose "No thanks", or say nothing, no analytics are used. You can change your choice at any time from the link at the foot of every page.

If you create an account

An account is optional. It lets you keep bookmarks, highlights and notes, and see them on each of your devices. We hold:

  • your email address, used to send you a sign-in code or link, and nothing else unless you ask;

  • a name, if you choose to give one;

  • what you make on the site: bookmarks, highlights, notes, tags, your reading place and the chapters you have read;

  • the devices you are signed in on, so you can sign any of them out.

We use this only to provide those features to you. Your notes are yours: no editor reads them, and they are never published. You can download everything we hold about you, and delete your account, from your account page. When you delete your account, your information is removed straight away, except that our backups keep a copy for up to 31 days before it is gone for good.

If you write to us

When you use the contact form, we receive your name, your email address and your message, and send them to EQTP's inbox so that we can reply. We keep this correspondence for as long as we need it to answer you, and for no more than two years.

Our legal basis

  • Running the site and keeping it secure: our legitimate interest in providing a reliable, safe service.

  • Analytics: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

  • Your account: providing the service you asked for.

  • Replying to you: our legitimate interest in answering the people who write to us.

Who else handles your information

We use a small number of providers to run the site. Each processes information only on our instructions and under a contract that protects it:

  • Fly.io, which runs our servers in London;

  • Neon, which holds our database in London;

  • Upstash, which keeps sign-in sessions in London;

  • Cloudflare, which stores files and delivers the site;

  • Backblaze, which keeps our encrypted backups;

  • Resend, which sends our emails;

  • Sentry, which records errors in the EU so we can fix them;

  • Google, for analytics, only if you allow it.

Some of these companies are based in the United States. Where your information leaves the UK, it is protected by the UK's adequacy regulations or by the standard contractual clauses approved for that purpose.

Your rights

You may ask to see the information we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive a copy in a form you can take elsewhere. Most of this you can do yourself from your account page; for anything else, write to us through the contact form and we will answer within one month. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Children

Accounts are not meant for children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has made one, tell us and we will delete it.

Changes to this notice

If we change how we use personal information, we will update this notice and the date at its top.
