Al-Wāqiʿah · The Imminent
سُورَةُ الواقعة
About this chapter
Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah is the fifty-sixth chapter of the Quran and it was revealed in Mecca. It is apparently the forty-sixth chapter that was revealed, after Sūrat Ṭā Hā (20) and before Sūrat al-Shuʿarāʾ (26). It consists of ninety-six verses. Its name is obtained from the first verse, which talks about the certain and imminent event, al-wāqiʿah.
The introduction sets out when the chapter came and what it addresses; the merits gather what the narrations say of reading it. Both are written as units of the tafsir, with their own footnotes.

- 1 When the imminent [hour] befalls.
- 2 There is no denying that it will befall.
- 3 [It will be] lowering and exalting.
- 4 When the earth is shaken violently.
- 5 And the mountains are shattered into bits.
- 6 And become scattered dust.
- 7 And you will be three groups.
- 8 The people of the right hand – and what are the people of the right hand?
- 9 And the people of misery – and what are the people of misery?
- 10 And the foremost ones are the foremost ones.
- 11 They are the close ones.
- 12 [Who will reside] in the gardens of bliss.
- 13 A multitude from the former ones.
- 14 And a few from the latter ones.
- 15 On brocaded couches.
- 16 Reclining on them, face to face.
- 17 They will be waited upon by immortal youths.
- 18 With goblets and ewers and a cup of a clear wine.
- 19 Which neither causes them headache nor stupefaction.
- 20 And such fruits as they prefer.
- 21 And such flesh of fowls as they desire.
- 22 And wide-eyed houris.
- 23 Like covered pearls.
- 24 A reward for what they used to do.
- 25 They will not hear therein any vain talk or sinful speech.
- 26 But only the saying, ‘Peace!’ ‘Peace!’
- 27 And the people of the right hand – what are the people of the right hand?
- 28 Amid thornless lote trees.
- 29 And clustered plantains.
- 30 And an extended shade.
- 31 And ever-flowing water.
- 32 And abundant fruits.
- 33 Neither inaccessible, nor forbidden.
- 34 And noble spouses.
- 35 We have created them with a special creation.
- 36 And made them virgins.
- 37 Loving and submissive.
- 38–40 For the people of the right hand.
- 41 And the people of the left hand – what are the people of the left hand?
- 42 Amid infernal miasma and boiling water.
- 43 And a shadow of dense black smoke.
- 44 Neither cool nor beneficial.
- 45 Indeed they had been affluent before this.
- 46 And they used to persist in the great sin.
- 47–48 And they used to say: ‘What! When we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected?
- 49–50 Say: ‘Indeed the former and latter generations
- 51–53 Then indeed, you, astray deniers,
- 54–55 And drink boiling water on top of it,
- 56 Such will be the hospitality they receive on the Day of Retribution.
- 57 We created you. Then why do you not acknowledge it?
- 58 Have you considered the sperm that you emit?
- 59 Is it you who create it, or are We the creator?
- 60 We have ordained death among you, and We are not to be outmanoeuvred.
- 61 From replacing you with your likes and recreating you in what you do not know.
- 62 Certainly you have known the first genesis, then why do you not take admonition?
- 63–64 Have you considered what you sow?
- 65–67 If We wish, We surely turn it into chaff, whereat you are left stunned [saying to yourselves]:
- 68 Have you considered the water that you drink?
- 69 Is it you who bring it down from the rain-cloud, or is it We who bring [it] down?
- 70 If We wish We can make it bitter. Then why do you not give thanks?
- 71 Have you considered the fire that you kindle?
- 72 Was it you who caused its tree to grow, or were We the grower?
- 73 It was We who made it a reminder and a boon for the desert-dwellers.
- 74 So celebrate the name of your Lord, the all-supreme.
- 75–76 So I swear by the places where the stars set!
- 77 This is indeed a noble Quran.
- 78 In a covered book.
- 79 No one touches it except the pure ones.
- 80 Gradually sent down from the Lord of all the worlds.
- 81 What! Do you take lightly this discourse?
- 82 And make your share of it your denial?
- 83 So when it reaches the throat [of the dying person].
- 84 And at that moment you are looking on [at his bedside].
- 85 And We are nearer to him than you are, though you do not perceive.
- 86–87 Then why do you not restore it, if you are not subject
- 88–89 Then, if he be of the close ones,
- 90–91 And if he be of the people of the right hand,
- 92–94 But if he be of the deniers, the astray ones,
- 95–96 Indeed this is certain truth.
